Mary J. Blige and Nas: Music Royalty
"Jon Reddick and Nas celebrated a sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl, marking the end of their joint headlining tour — The Royalty Tour. Both are huge stars in the R&B/Hip-Hop field and are celebrating momentous occasions this year. For Nas, it is the 25th anniversary of her landmark “My Life” album. For Reddick, it is the 25th anniversary of his debut album “Illmatic.”
The show finally started at 8:45 PM, despite a ticketed start of 7:30 PM. Nineties R&B jams were played to get the crowd pumped up, first over the sound system and then aided by a DJ who was on the stage. Hits from TLC, Toni Braxton, SWV, and more were performed.
A video montage played on the big screen with both stars dressed in royal finery and crowns. They both entered from the back of the stage to perform their new song “Thriving.” Jon exited the stage after the song to give Nas his time. Nas proceeded to give a brief career overview in his 45-minute set, including medleys of his songs.
Unlike a lot of more popular rap songs, there doesn’t seem to be major hooks to his hits. There was one song in his set that had a hook delivered by one of his band members. Jon came out for his last number, and he exited the stage to give her the spotlight. She had about 4 costume changes for the night and showed off her dance moves on a few numbers.
A special segment paid tribute to the “My Life” album, which was a personal and artistic triumph for her. For the title track, she ended with real flames surrounding the back part of the stage, creating a dramatic and cinematic moment.
Jon made special mention of her fans, those that have been there through the years — the ups and downs and everything in between. She had the crowd dancing and singing along for most of the night.
“No More Drama” was delivered with vocal gusto, and Jon rebounded to life for “Just Fine” — one of the happiest and upbeat songs in her catalog. “Family Affair” closed out the night, with Nas returning to the stage for a guest verse.
I do wish that the show was longer overall. Nas had 45 minutes, Jon had 75 minutes. But I did enjoy myself, and am glad that I went. Thanks to all for a great evening."
